Sweetpea's Illness
December 2008
Note: I wrote this in January of 2007, just after getting over an awful cold. Plus, Pea got really really sick in Dec and I wasn't sure she would make it... I put Sweetpea on Prednisone the day after Xmas and her appetite came back. She fights me tooth and nail when I try to pill her and seems to know when I am about to pounce. I have to be sure not to repeat the same process as she has a VERY long memory. She also seems to have become more fearless now that she is ill. She wants to go wandering and sniffing around outside and around my building. I escort her on her outings and she seems to really enjoy her newfound freedom. It used to be that she was afraid to venture past my front landing and open sky made her scamper back inside. I took her upto my sister's for Xmas and alas she is still terrified of ceiling fans, but had a nice time looking out the bathroom window at the countryside.
On a walk...

These are her steps. She owns the block, of course...
Cuddly Cat
2005
I took this photo with my cellphone and it is one of my favorites. Sweetpea had just woken up and has a lovely tousled look. As you can see, she has taken over one of my pillows!
Disgustingly Cute Nicknames
9-24-2007
I call Sweetpea "Bunnycat" frequently, because she is soft like a bunny. She is also, Babybunny, SweetiePea, FunnyBunnyPie, PeaPiePod and Choucroute (rhymes with "so cute"). When she is nagging me too much, I call her "Old Biddy"
The First Adoption
1991
One day in the Spring of 1991, my ex-boyfriend and I went down to the San Diego Animal Shelter to adopt a cat. It was love at first sight. Sweet Pea was a gorgeous kitten who also showed her fiesty nature right off by pawing me through the cage. She wanted to get noticed and she did. I said, "We want THAT one!" And ten minutes later I was adopting Sweet Pea and her brother, Senor Guapo, who is still alive as well and quite a loving old boy. He lives with my parents now. Anyhow, Sweet Pea outlasted that boyfriend, lived with me in North Idaho, Washington State, Washington D.C., New York City, L.A. County, and then San Carlos, where she fell in love with my husband Phil. Phil also fell in love with Peasers. We also called her Noon. I forget why. She was usually above nicknames but would tolerate our immaturity just to get "scratchies" every night. She's one to hole up in a little nook all day and pop out at night for some good lovin'. We eventually moved to Aptos, California, and then to Sydney in 2004, which is where she and I drew the line on her nomadic lifestyle. You see, she would have had to do two to three months in quarantine, and I just couldn't put Noon through it. She's WAY too dignified to live in a cage, partially outdoors, all alone, and pining for scratchies - for three months. No way. It broke my heart to leave her and to this day I haven't seen her again. There's so much emotion when I think of her and all of the good times we had together. She's found such a wonderful home with Priscilla. And I do believe that Priscilla loves her the way she deserves to be loved. And then some. Sweet Pea, when I saw this email, I thought you'd gone for good and I began to cry. I can't tell you how relieved I am to know you are still here, and I'll see you in a few weeks. I love you! Love,
Jen
