Multicultural School Environment
1980
In the 1980's schools began being looked at as a "social system from a multicultural context" (Banks, 1981). During this time period there schools were adding more curriculum of women's history as well as famous black history. The teachers began changing their attitudes toward what they were required to teach, their assessment methods, and their teaching styles. This was a move forward of incorporating a new multicultural education. Banks, J. (1981). Education in the 80s: Multiethnic education. Washington, D.C.: National Education Association.
Women's Rights Movement
1960
The Women's Rights Movement focused on the institutional sexism and oppression of women. When it came to education, women did not have equal rights or opportunities as others. As a result of this movement, schools incorporate women's history and experiences in the curriculum.
Civil Rights Movement
1950
The Civil Rights Movement challenged the white leaders of America. They focused on cultural and political issues that African Americans faced in institutions due to their race. They demanded institutional equality, the end of discriminatory practices, curriculum reform and a re-examination of hiring practices.
Declaration of Independence 'all men are created equal'
1776
In the year 1776 the Founding Fathers expressed the nation's ideas that 'all men are created equal'. During that time period that stood for white men only. However, over the years this phrase has been referred to and represents the struggles of equality for all people.
